The History of Uncle Stu
A bunch of folks looked around the wildland fire use
(WFU) world and came to the conclusion that there was plenty of policy
and fancy strategic statements floating about, but there was very little
practical advice on how to do WFU, especially for those folks who were
beginning to build a program. With that in mind, and given the new emphasis
on Appropriate Management Response (AMR), a bunch of WFU folks decided
to put something together to help out the field. This is their story and
their advice.
Uncle Stu is named in honor of Stewart Edward White,
a novelist and timber land owner who carried the torch for "light
burning" or "Paiute forestry" from 1916 thru the early
20s. His philosophy of fire management was in direct conflict with the
U.S. Forest Service's 10:00am full suppression policy that was developed
after the 1910 fires.
Uncle Stu is a composite of fire folks who do WFU and
are part of the WFU Underground. If you averaged out their experience
and qualifications, you'd get something like this:
|
30+ years in fire
10+ years doing WFU
|
Uncle Stu's red card would look something like
this:
| ICT2
/ FUM1 / FUM2 / SOF2 / OSC2 / PSC2 / FBAN / LTAN |
And of course, Uncle Stu would have plenty of gray hair.
